European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
